Hunting the Klinaklini

The most productive hunting habitats are river bottoms and swamps along a 50 km stretch of the Klinaklini River. The lower 25 km is fly in access only, while the upper 25 km can be reached by ATV and horseback.

Fly In Hunts

Our fly in hunts access areas of superior habitat which have little hunting pressure.

The Hunt originates at the Tweedsmuir Air float plane base at Nimpo Lake, B.C. A 30 minute 70 km flight will take you to Klinaklini Lake. You will be met by our guides and proceed by jet boat to our Turner Flats base camp (20 km of river, 45 minutes). For further details on travel to and from Nimpo Lake and the Tweedsmuir Air Services, see Location & Transport.

Camp facilities include a camp kitchen, sauna / shower house, bunk house, laundry, marine VHF base station, satellite phone and email. All boats carry hand held marine VHF.

The primary mode of travel is along the river by jet boat. Many grass meadows and other natural openings in the willow bottom land and aspen forest can be reached by a short trail from a variety of openings. This allows us to cover a great deal of bottom land, and, where required, accommodate hunters with limited mobility or previous experience. We also maintain a 18 km trail network along the river and hillsides which provides an alternative to boat travel and is especially useful for evening hunts or to access upriver meadows. Occasional use is made of spike camps at the best locations.

These hunts are most economical in a party of four, which is the normal capacity of the De Havilland Beaver float plane. The average total number of flights required for a four person hunting party is generally between three and four, and depends upon factors such as total luggage load, timing of harvest, and weather. Warm weather will require a greater number of flights in order to get the harvest to a locker.

ATV and Horseback

Our up river hunts are conducted by a combination of 4 X 4, ATV and horseback, and again access areas of superior habitat with little hunting pressure, and work well with a party of two to four. These hunts are more strenuous than the fly in and the main method of travel is by foot, with occasional use of a boat along the river. The upper river area is the best for deer but also has excellent moose and bear habitat. Camp facilities are all wall tents with wood stoves if required.
